Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke causes more than a quarter of all deaths in the UK.5 An estimated 160,000 people die from CVDs each year and CHD is the UK's single biggest killer.5

Cardiovascular disease - what are the risks?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of premature CHD and stroke could be prevented by positive lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, regular exercise and abstinence from smoking. 6,7

People at high risk as a result of the presence of one or more risk factors, need early detection and appropriate management

Risk factors can be categorised into unmodifiable (factors that cannot be addressed), and modifiable (where changes can be made to decrease risk). 8 Modifiable risk factors can be further divided into behavioural and metabolic risk factors.
